BELIEF AND COMMUNICATION

- a project intended to foster greater understanding between people of any faith or none -

The Belief and Communication Project is intended to develop discussions between a broad range of individuals about what they believe and about the communication and representation of beliefs to others, either directly or via the media.

The Belief and Communication Project encourages

*    the critical and respectful study of belief systems and religion.
*    best media practice in respect of the representation of different faiths and beliefs.
*    dialogue between persons of different faiths or none, and the development of methodologies of dialogue.

The Belief and Communication Project reaches out to bring together people of different ages, genders and beliefs, in a cross-cultural learning experience incorporating some of the latest developments in on-line educational technology. It addresses, in an inclusive and practical manner, the emerging multifaith and multicultural nature of society, both nationally and internationally.

Among many matters worthy of attention are representations of Islam, the alienation of people from churches but not necessarily from spirituality, the role of the media in creating alternative forms of "sacred space", and the absence of suitable fora for dialogue in the community.

The Belief and Communication Project is supported by a Dublin City University Teaching & Learning Fellowship. It was commenced in October 2004 and is under the direction of Dr Colum Kenny. Those interested in further information may contact him directly via www.comms.dcu.ie/kennyc
